It is actually two villages, new Belchite and old Belchite. New Belchite is a peaceful home for a small community of inhabitants. Nestling up against this village is Old Belchite, an ancient village that became a key location in the Spanish Civil War. In 1937 the republican forces who were defending Spain's democratic republic from Franco's fascist uprising, took and held Belchite after days of intense fighting. Fighting to drive the republicans out, Franco's forces destroyed the city with heavy bombardments.
