Today I would like to tell you about a falling down house in the Balkans.
Bearing this in mind it is clear to me that organised collective squatting is just the formalisation of an activity that has always been. The squatting collective provide some security and safety to the act of using a neglected property and by announcing their occupation to the world they are enabled to do more and provide more than those 'silent squatters' who creep into a building and live there in secret. The people using the rooms above cannot be seen to be fixing the roof or maintaining the structure, they would immediately be removed, only the safety of a collective, public squat can provide this freedom to care for the building and to forge links with the local community.
The scene below was my first view of this neglected house. The mattress appears to have been dumped there among the rubble, but I bet you that it has been a bed for someone in the last few months.
